Migrating a WordPress database from one host to another

If like me you set your systems up locally then migrate the whole site to the official host you will know that there are a couple of database updates to be made to ensure that the site can correctly link to itself. This post is a reminder of what needs to be changed. There are two ways to do this.
  1. Update the URL and blog home page using WordPress Admin UI
  2. Update using phpMyAdmin

Using WordPress Admin

Enter the URL directly into your browser’s address field e.g. http://www.bobbingwidewebdesign.com/wp-admin/options-general.php When prompted to login type the ‘admin’  Username and Password and choose the Log In button Update the values for the WordPress address (URL) and Blog address (URL)  (e.g. http://www.bobbingwidewebdesign.com) then choose Save Changes.

Using phpMyAdmin

Using phpMyAdmin, select the ‘options’ table and find the entry for ‘home’. Change the value from the original host (e.g. http://orig-host/my-blog) to the new host’s home ( e.g. http://www.bobbingwidewebdesign.com )

Notes

This is more development than website design, so why am I telling you this here?
  1. oops …… well I’ve cloned a couple of WordPress systems now and each time I’ve forgotten to do it, so I thought it’s time I wrote it down.
  2. One of the sites that wasn’t working properly was this one
