bob or fob, wide or hide, bing or bong

Last Friday I gave a short (10 minute), interactive presentation to members of my networking group (Your Network South, organised by Ron Hodgson). The subject of the presentation was “criteria for a good website”. The content of the presentation was based upon the tests I perform when analysing a website. These tests fall into 3 categories:
  1. bob tests - basic operational behaviour basic operational behaviour
  2. the bing test can often be done in 3-5 secondsa simple test with two results: bing or bong. bing is good
  3. wide tests - for measuring penetration, eminence, popularitytests of the penetration, eminence, popularity etc. of the site
A good site is one that passes all the tests: getting a bob pass, bing pass (just known as a bing) and wide pass. Alternatively a site can get one or more of  the following: fob = bob fail
bong is the opposite of bing. It failed the bing test
hide is the term for failing to pass a wide test
A pdf version of the presentation, excluding narrative, is available on Scribd. Have a look for yourself and decide which of the sites get bings or bongs.

Disclaimer: bing tests primarily express your opinion. It’s been said that people decide within 3 to  5 seconds whether or not they like a site. But sometimes a website passes initially then gets a bong a bit later. Or vice-versa.
Also note that what you might consider to be a bong may already have been registered as a fob.
