Should shortcode’s inside []’s expand

I was led to believe that if you want to document a WordPress shortcode (such as [[ bw_mailto]]) then you just include the example shortcode with two open and closing square brackets, and not need the space that I had been using eg [bw_mailto] produces

Email: herb@bobbingwide.com

But as you can see in this instance of WordPress it doesn’t work – both attempts get expanded. So I’ll still have to use the [ bw_mailto] version (space between [ and the shortcode) for the time being.

Meanwhile in the land of Drupal

I’ve been implementing the oik plugin ( oik as a Drupal module (also called oik). Having experimented with the shortcode module I decided I preferred the original (but possibly buggy) way that WordPress expands the shortcodes. And it was while working on my (local) Drupal installation that I found I could use the double square bracket solution to document the [[shortcode]] . The reason it works here is because there’s no expansion for [shortcode]. See? I expect if I investigate further on WordPress I’ll find that do_shortcode() gets executed at least twice  over the whole content. That may or may not be annoying… It depends on who caused it to happen.
