As part of the alpha test of oik version 1.17 I have installed a couple of new plugins which are supported directly from oik.
Developer plugins
Before I started working for myself, I developed application sofware at IBM. I’ve been developing “tracing” functions for nearly 21 years. So it seemed quite natural to me that, when I developed the oik plugin, I included a tracing capability: oik bwtrace
I’ve just been following a conference call video and reading subsequent comments ( http://dotorgplugins.wordpress.com/2012/08/15/were-live/comment-page-1/#comment-128 ), about the state of the Wordpress plugin repository.
I got pointed to a plugin I’d heard of but not used ( developer ) , downloaded it and before long became immersed in a multitude of distractions.
- why does WordPress.org allow plugins that deliver the same shortcode ( e.g. in both audio and jetpack )
- why does it allow plugins that seem to want to take over your website… e.g. those that deliver jQuery to a page even though it’s not needed (e.g. NextGEN gallery)
- shouldn’t a plugin author be allowed to re-open a closed forum article?
- why is it so difficult to initiate communication with other wordpress (plugin/theme) developers?
- why isn’t there a really good tool for converting PHPDoc comments into WordPress content
- how can I grep the WordPress SVN repository?
- how useless is a message that just says Error!
- What’s a WordPress.com VIP project?
- etc.
So anyway, I thought I’d create a page related to developer plugins (or plugins for developers) to summarise the ‘tree’ of plugins that are recommended and others that are available. The main reasons for doing this are to find out if I’m missing anything important and perhaps help a few other developers.

Starting from developer here’s the table of plugins that are recommended.

Comments from August 20th
Well, that doesn’t look like a shining set of exemplar plugins!
- They’ve been tested up to: 3.2.1, 3.3.2, 3.4-alpha, 3.4-beta4, 3.4.1 (hooray!), 3.5 and trunk.
- If you read the readme’s you’ll find hardly any information about what the plugins do. No FAQ’s worth mentioning.

WOW plugins used by Bobbing Wide – July 2012
It’s been a year since I last listed the plugins I use on Bobbing Wide websites. Here’s a brief summary of what’s changed.
rebranding Bobbing Wide
In oik version 1.4 there is a new version of bwlink.css which alters the way the Bobbing Wide shortcode expands
So my “logo” is now a lot simpler.
blogger to WordPress plugins
I hardly ever use my blogger sites so I’m migrating them into my WordPress sites.
There should only be two steps
- Import the blogger posts into WordPress
- Set up 301 redirection from blogger to WordPress
But, like quite a few others, I had problems with the 301 redirect routines that were available.
So I developed my own plugin to do that part… oik-blogger-redirect.
How to clone a hosted WordPress site to WPMS
An easy way to clone a hosted WordPress site to WordPress Multisite is to use WordPress export and import.
How to clone a local site to a hosted WordPress site
The chances of this being the best way to clone a site from a local WordPress installation to a hosted WordPress installation are pretty slim. But here are some steps that I used when I wanted to clone a local WordPress site to a hosted WordPress site, completely replacing what was there already.
IE9 compatibility mode – Google Map split pin
Another side effect of displaying a website in IE9 Compatibility mode is that the red marker pin on a Google Map is incorrectly displayed as a split pin.
IE9 Compatibility mode – sub menu item truncated
While working on a site with an Artisteer generated theme I recently discovered this problem: when viewed in IE9 Compatibility mode the sub-menu items were being truncated.
testing cookie-cat v1.1
I’m just testing the new version of my cookie-cat plugin (v 1.1) and I realise that I deactivated a number of plugins when I was hunting down the __qca cookie and forgot to reactivate them.
Tracking down unknown cookies
Over on herbmiller.me I’ve been trying to track down the code that causes the __qca cookie to appear. Well on this site I’ve plenty more unknown cookies. So let’s see if we can identify where they come from. Similar process… remove the cookie and see what causes it to reappear.
I’m also using a cookie audit tool from Attacat I’ve deactivated a heap of plugins in order to make this a bit easier.
Cookie Name | Cookie Category | Description | Duration |
wordpress_ | 2 | WordPress cookie for a logged in user. | session |
wordpress_logged_in_ | 2 | WordPress cookie for a logged in user | session |
wordpress_test_ | 2 | WordPress cookie for a logged in user | session |
wordpress_test_cookie | 2 | WordPress test cookie | session |
wp-settings- | 1 | Wordpress also sets a few wp-settings-[UID] cookies. The number on the end is your individual user ID from the users database table. This is used to customize your view of admin interface, and possibly also the main site interface. |

wp-settings-time- | 2 | Wordpress also sets a few wp-settings-{time}-[UID] cookies. The number on the end is your individual user ID from the users database table. This is used to customize your view of admin interface, and possibly also the main site interface. | 1 year |
PHPSESSID | 1 | To identify your unique session on the website | session |
SESS | 1 | To ensure that you are recognised when you move from page to page within the site and that any information you have entered is remembered. | session |
__qca | 2 | The _qca cookie may use your “computer’s IP address, pixel code, referring HTTP location, current HTTP location, search string, time of the access, browser’s time, any searches made on the applicable website, and other statistics” in order to “analyze Log Data from different websites and combine it with other non Personally Identifiable Information to produce the Reports that are made available on the Quantcast.com Site, to enable web publishers and advertisers to deliver audience segments that are appropriate for their products or services.” | 5 years |
testing oik v1.12 and oik-nivo-slider v1.2
This is a simple test of the oik-nivo-slider version 1.2, which is dependent upon oik version 1.2
In the new version I have added some logic to display slideshows of plugin screenshots.
